Wellness and Detoxification

The First Step to Wellness ~ Detoxification

The elimination of toxins is very important for improved immune function.  Toxins are found in the air that we breathe, the water we drink, the food that we eat and even in our mouth from sources of dental toxins. Once our systems are overloaded with toxins it becomes an ideal environment for a multitude of diseases, autoimmune conditions, parasites and Candida.

Your skin, liver, kidneys, lymphatic system and colon perform together to keep toxins and waste moving naturally. Unfortunately, excess buildup of toxins and your body’s constant effort to eliminate them burns up vital nutrients, drains energy, weakens the immune system and affects your health in a variety of ways.  There are many natural therapies that aid in the elimination of these toxins.

Experts agree that your colon might hold the key to your overall health. When working well, your colon absorbs essential nutrients and passes waste and toxins out of your body. Many diseases are now being related directly or indirectly to a congested colon. Improperly digested food goes through the intestinal system, it turns to waste, attaches itself to the intestinal wall and becomes toxic.  As 70% of our immune system is in our digestive tract, these toxins severely impair our immune system. This toxic waste is essentially slow acting poison to the human body.

Colon therapy, also referred to as colonics is the gentle introduction of purified water into the colon, washing the large intestine.  Toxins that have built up over the years along with encrusted fecal matter mucous begin to slough off and evacuate. This safe and natural treatment is both alleviating and effective.

Your skin is a major organ of elimination, but many people do not sweat on a regular basis.  Sedentary living can contribute to inactivating this inborn system of removing the buildup of toxins.  FAR Infrared saunas warm the body instead of heating the surrounding air. Infrared saunas are able to penetrate deeper into the skin which activates and releases debris from the subcutaneous fat just beneath the skin reducing your toxic load significantly.

Your lymphatic system is responsible for initiating immune response.  This system picks up waste and toxins from your body’s cells and carries it away with lymph fluid.  Lymphatic massage helps by increasing lymphatic circulation thus detoxifying the body and increasing the functions of the immune system.

Take your step on the road to regaining your health by engaging in some of these detoxification practices on a regular basis.

Initial Contact with Utopia Wellness

Initial contact with Utopia creates a warm and fuzzy glow. Speaking with Mark is the only way to go.It’s always a pleasure for someone to answer the phone but to have someone in the know is practically unknown.  (Thanks Mark)

Expressing my feelings about Utopia seems a daunting task.  Upon arrival at the clinic I had a lot of questions to ask.

The orientation by Belinda is enough to smother even the brightest of minds.

The knowledge of nutrition that Belinda brings to the Center makes her the best of finds.  (Que tengas una vida maravillosa)

Talk about therapy and what do you get?  Laughter is a good bet.

The Queen of that therapy resides in the front office.  The merriment from there is nothing short of raucous. Rox may call you honey but she also collects the money.  (May your laughter ring forever)

Sara monitors us all.  Her office is the first door on the left down the hall.

When the blood work comes out, Sara lets us know what it’s all about.

You may think her advice is cold as ice, but when she warms up she can’t be more nice. (Maintain that glow forever)

When you first enter Utopia you must take a seat where Claudia will have you sign a sheet.

The dry humor displayed by Claudia will often give cause for alarm but getting to know her reveals her sweet charm.  (Can I cross my legs now?)

When in need of colon care, Beth is always there.

She her own little empire that when one leaves they walk a little higher.

(Love your dedication)

The I.V.’s are hung by the chairs with care.  Xochitl or Shayla will stick you when you get there.  If you think you are a tough nut wait until Xochitl gives you a shot in the butt.  (Thanks for caring girls)

Jake is in charge of making your deepest woes go away.  He does this by having you write an essay each day.

If he delves into your deepest thoughts do not despair, he is only trying to get your body to repair.  (Your pot of gold awaits you)

When you hear that cute giggle you know that Elizabeth is about.  Her trained hands we can’t do without.

When it comes to being a body detective she is the most effective.

(I offer deep feeling for you)

When it comes to practice what you preach, Doc is out of reach.

“Growing old is mandatory, growing up is optional”, is obviously Doc’s motto.

He wears his Superman socks while driving his hot rod auto.

I’m sharing my feelings with you because you made my journey so pleasant.  I have never become so fond of so many people in such a short time.  I hope I left something positive there at Utopia.  I love you and miss you.  See you in February.

The Mind/Body Connection

Many patients first turn to holistic medicine because they know what they don’t want rather than understanding the approach itself. They are very clear in not wanting surgery, biopsies, chemotherapy, radiation or a lifetime commitment to medications. That doesn’t necessarily mean that they understand the nature of the mind, body and spirit approach to treating diseases.

Mind/Body Connection

Upon arriving at Utopia, many are still of the mindset that we and not they are in control of their outcome. They may be compliant in taking supplements, making dietary changes and keeping to their appointed therapy schedules but given the opportunity, they would place the emotional work on the back burner if allowed to. The concept that emotional imbalances in their lives can negatively affect their overall health is foreign to them. The thought of making the necessary changes in their lives in order to create a harmonious environment scares them. The amount of work involved in confronting their anger, hurt or confusion is overwhelming to them.

When we allow and accept everything that happens to us as though we have no choice, we are taking a passive role in our lives. The feeling that we are victims of circumstance, that we have no choice, leaves us feeling helpless and hopeless. These negative emotions can cause the physical self to fall down on its job of fighting off disease.

In the game of life, the active participant comes out a winner, while the passive spectator is often the loser. You can decide how you will get your needs met and work in cooperation with others to accomplish what is wanted. You can let others know how you wish to be treated and what you will and will not accept. Only you can set boundaries for yourself.

Learning to respond differently may not happen overnight. You can begin by being more aware of how you are reacting to various people and events. You can try different responses until you find the ones that work for you. With practice, your heightened sense of awareness, coupled with your power of choice, will help you establish new behaviors and create wellness.

The Four Aspects of You

In order to create wellness, every aspect of yourself must have its needs met and must work in harmony. Each aspect of yourself must work in accord to achieve overall health and each part needs your attention and care to perform at its best. The four aspects of yourself are as follows:

Medicine Wheel
  • The Physical you (your body) – This is your tangible structure. This includes the five senses, which enables you to touch, see, hear, smell and taste the world around you. The physical you requires good nutrition, appropriate weight, beneficial exercise and adequate rest.
  • The Emotional you (your feelings) – This is your range of emotions from fear and anger to love and joy. The emotional you needs to give and receive forgiveness, love and compassion. The emotional you needs to laugh and experience happiness as well as joyful relationships with yourself and others.
  • The Mental you (your thoughts) – This is your knowledge, attitudes and beliefs; your analytical self. The mental you needs self-supportive attitudes, positive thoughts and viewpoints and a positive self-image.
  • The Spiritual you (your spirit) – This is your relationship with yourself, your creativity, your life purpose, and your relationship with a Higher Power. The spiritual you requires inner calmness, openness to your creativity and a trust in your inner knowing.

All of these aspects work together to make you a whole person. What happens to one aspect can affect all the other aspects. In order to create wellness you must expand your focus beyond mere physical health and strive to balance and integrate your physical, emotional, mental and spiritual aspects. These aspects of yourself must be in balance for optimal well-being.

Declare Your Independence!

As our nation celebrates its independence, we pause to reflect on the price that was paid for that independence.  Countless sacrifices were made and many lives were lost in the quest for freedom.  We as a people stood our ground and declared that we were all created equal and that we were all endowed with certain unalienable rights, which among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.A declaration is a proclamation.  When you make a personal declaration you are proclaiming and asserting what it is that you desire in your life. Have you ever considered what your personal declaration of independence would look like?  Is there anything or anyone that is preventing you from living the life you choose for yourself or hindering your pursuit of happiness?Take the time to reflect upon what you want in life.  Think about the areas that you are struggling with or those that you would like to see some improvements.  Reflect upon the price that you have paid in allowing yourself and others to dismiss the significance of your life. How much longer will you sacrifice your right to be free to live the life you choose to live?

Write down your declarations and proclaim them out loud.  Here are some examples that may help you in preparing your declaration:

  • I pledge to love myself unconditionally.
  • I pledge to make my life a priority.
  • I pledge to trust myself unconditionally.
  • I pledge to respect myself unconditionally.
  • I pledge to make myself happy.
  • I pledge to make my life fun.

Summer Sun Protection Tips

Great Minds think alike

Summer is here! Who doesn’t want to be outside enjoying fun activities in the sun?  Here are a few tips that will help you to avoid the unwanted consequences of sunburn and it’s long term damaging effects due to overexposure.

Summer Sun Protection Tips
  1. Check the UV index for the day of your outing. The UV index provides important information to help you plan your outdoor activities in ways to prevent sun exposure.
  1. Make you plans around the sun. Go outdoors in early morning or late afternoon when the sun is lower in the sky. Keep in mind that the sun is strongest between 10:00am and 4:00pm.
  1. Find a shady spot or make your own shade. When planning a picnic, search for a spot under a tree or take a large beach umbrella or a canopy to the beach.  Keep very young children (6 months or less) out of the sun. Even when in the shade, remember that UV rays bounce off sand and water. These simple measures can reduce the risk of multiple burns by 30%
  1. Cover up! Wearing clothes such as shirts, hats, shorts and pants shield your skin from the sun’s UV rays. Wear a hat with a wide brim that shades your face, ears and the back of your neck. You can reduce the risk of damaging sun exposure by 27% just by covering up.
  1. Protect your eyes. Sunglasses are essential when protecting your eyes from UV radiation, they are not simply a fashion accessory; they can reduce the risk of cataracts and protect the tender skin around your eyes from sun exposure. Choose sunglasses that block both UVA and UVB rays.
  1. Don’t get burned! Red, sore, blistered skin means you’ve gotten far too much sun.  Sunscreen should actually be your last line of defense against sun damage. When using sunscreen make sure it has a sun protective factor of 15 or higher with both UVA and UVB protection. Don’t forget that sunscreen wears off and you should reapply often.  Refer to the Environmental Working Group’s website to get the score on your current sunscreen product and for a guide to choosing safer sunscreen products.

Chelation Therapy Critics Refuted!

Great Minds think alike

Utopia Wellness and Carlos Garcia, M.D. have been offering Chelation Therapy successfully and safely to patients for over 20 years.  These patients suffer from heart disease, strokes, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and more.  In the past, critics of this valuable therapy cited the lack of scientific double-blind studies showing the therapy is efficacious and safe. Groups such as the Quackbusters are all over the internet calling doctors that offer the therapy, unethical, frauds, quacks and lunatics.  The doctors that offer this life-saving therapy are well aware of the benefits and are willing to face ridicule, humiliation and renouncement from their peers in order to help their patients.  These doctors would love nothing more than to see a double-blind study conducted to hush their critics and make chelation therapy more widely available to patients.  The challenge has been, however, who would fund this study?

Chelation Therapy Critics Refuted

Most double-blind studies are conducted by Big Pharma seeking to obtain FDA approval for a new drug.  They possess the substantial resources necessary to conduct the studies and will do so because they stand to gain enormous returns on their investment.  EDTA which is used in chelation therapy is a readily available and inexpensive amino acid whose patentability expired long ago.  No one stands to financially gain from conducting the study (except the patient).  Enter Gervasio Lamas, M.D.

Gervasio Antonio Lamas, M.D. is the chief of cardiology at Columbia University Division of Cardiology, Mount Sinai Hospital.  Dr. Lamas received his BA in Biochemical Sciences (cum laude) from Harvard College and his MD with honors (AOA) from New York University. He completed his internship, residency, and cardiology training at the Brigham and Women’s hospital (Harvard Medical School, Boston MA), and then served on the faculty of Harvard Medical School.  I think his CV and credentials would give the critics of chelation pause!

Dr. Lamas described his epiphany on chelation therapy in a similar way that Utopia Wellness’s Dr. Garcia experienced it.  The following excerpt was reported by James Hamblin of The Atlantic.  You can read his article in it’s entirety at http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2014/10/there-is-no-alternative-medicine/379342/

One day in 1999, a disheveled man (Lamas describes him as resembling Lieutenant Columbo, but with heart disease) came to Mount Sinai asking whether chelation therapy was worthwhile. “Of course not,” Lamas told him. “That’s quackery. It might be dangerous, it’s certainly costly, and it’s not going to do you any good.”

But that night, Lamas found himself dwelling on his dogmatic response. “It’s not like I had a class on chelation therapy,” he told me, his eyes closing as he smiled. On the windowless walls of his office hang his Harvard degree, a certification of training from Boston’s prestigious Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and one of his many New England Journal of Medicine articles—his past work includes seminal research that changed how cardiologists use pacemakers. Earlier in his career, he said, researching an alternative-medicine practice never would have crossed his mind. In Miami, though, the culture is more “open-minded.” So he called up the National Institutes of Health and set about procuring the funds to get to the bottom of his Columbo dilemma.  He succeeded and the study was funded.

The randomized double-blind study was conducted between 2003-2010 on 1,708 adults aged 50 and older. Study participants had suffered a heart attack six weeks or more before enrollment.  The results proved EDTA chelation therapy is clinically significant and safe for patients with cardiovascular disease and diabetes.  Dr. Lamas stated in his findings that this statistically significant improvement should be further studied to determine if chelation therapy should be routinely offered for cardiovascular hydisease.

Plans are now underway for a 2016 study on using chelation therapy to treat diabetes.  In the meantime, Dr. Lamas will continue to offer chelation therapy to his patients.  Of significant importance to the advancement of this life-saving treatment, Mount Sinai Hospital is now the first US hospital to offer chelation therapy for cardiovascular patients.

Lose Weight Without Dieting

Recently, at the Truth About Cancer Live Symposium many of the presenters emphatically declared that in order to overcome cancer and avoid other types of chronic diseases, lifestyle changes are a must. It was stated that over 90% of cancers come from external sources such as diets consisting of highly processed foods, smoking, drinking alcohol, environmental toxins and pollution. In fact, most common cancers can be prevented by adopting a healthier diet, exercising regularly and maintaining a healthy weight. The current statistics on weight show that 34% of Americans are obese and 32% are overweight. This means that obesity has doubled in our country since 1980 and can be a major contributor to disease.

Weight Loss for Wellness and Longevity

At Utopia Wellness, our approach is weight loss for wellness and longevity. We believe you can lose weight without dieting. Contrary to other programs, ours is not a diet; it is not about counting calories or points; it is not about diet pills or deprivation. If we know anything about diets these days, it’s that diets don’t work! Lifestyle changes do! When you consider all the information available at your fingertips, there shouldn’t be an overweight person left on the planet! Diets are a temporary solution at best and when the weight comes back on, you are left with a feeling of failure and disappointment. This won’t happen if you change your thinking. This won’t happen if you make the decision to make yourself and your health a priority.

Our program provides the necessary tools to assist our patients in reducing the risk of coronary artery disease, stroke, cancer and Type 2 diabetes. Many patients are able to significantly reduce or completely eliminate harmful medications. The nutritional counseling that our patients receive from our certified holistic nutritionist assists them in navigating through the process of healthy weight loss and in creating balance in their lives while feeling more energized and healthy.

Our holistic approach treats the whole person by also addressing the emotional component and challenges that may present themselves along the way. It is about helping our patients change their thought process in order to commit to lifelong lifestyle changes. It is about helping them to be the healthiest they have ever been, in the best body that they have ever had.
