How to Interview Your Oncologist – Part 2

by Carlos M. Garcia, M.D.

How to Interview Your Oncologist

What is my diagnosis and are you planning to get a second opinion before we start anything? When will that be done please?

Mainstream medicine, including oncology relies on a tissue diagnosis.  The illusion presented to the general public is that biopsies are 100% accurate.   In …78 Japanese patients with ampullary tumor were retrospectively reviewed to investigate the clinical implications of endoscopic biopsy … Biopsy accuracy of carcinoma (group 4 or 5) was 70%..1.  Whereas, I could refer to other studies to drill this point home, the bottom line is that practitioners limit medical accuracy be they physicians, assistants or technicians, we all make errors, myself included. All people involved in medicine, have an error value, which may decrease with experience or may increase in advance age. This is practitioner specific.  Thus as with any other industry, the practice of medicine is only as accurate as the degree of mistake made and left uncorrected through a lack of oversight. When pathology renders a diagnosis, they are issuing an opinion limited by their experience.

All diagnosis is opinions limited by experience. However, mainstream medical protocols are based on this alleged infallible process, the tissue pathological diagnosis. It has been my experience that rarely is a second opinion requested by an oncologist. In those when a second opinion is requested, a previous interpretation (opinion) has been provided, thus tainting or skewing the bias of the second opinion. In my opinion, a second opinion should not provide any previous diagnosis.

What caused my cancer or what is / are the origin(s) of my cancer questions:

Was it genetic?

Genetics 101: Think of genes as a wardrobe.  If you elect formal wear for an event, then we only see, or you are only expressing, that set of clothing.  Although your closet has other selections, no one can see them because by choosing your formal wear, you have also chosen NOT to express your beach wear. Thus expression of a gene also involves suppression of other genes. Additionally, as in the wardrobe analogy, when you do not have supporting genes, as when you do not have supporting accessories for an outfit, circumstances may prohibit your ability to select that garment or express the gene. The biology of genetic expression is very convoluted and not easily explained. Many of the headlines and news snippets refer to a laboratory condition which, when compared to the human body, are extremely limited and do not accurately represent all the innumerable variables, which occur within every one of our cells, let alone our body.

I tell my patients, if it has not occurred since birth, then the practitioner has to evaluate the event that caused your body to express that condition.  Thus if the practitioner wants to hide behind the genetic curtain, the why was the gene expressed at this time. An example: The BRCA gene associated with breast cancer. Some women have it. They are born with it. Then in their late, 20’s, 30’s, 40’s and even 50’s they develop breast cancer. A genetic study confirms the presence of that gene within that gene pool. Pathology then goes to further confuse the issue with estrogen, or progesterone positive or negative receptor stimulation, or HER2 (human epidermal growth factor receptor 2) positive or negative breast cancer, which may promote the growth of cancer cells.

Do you think my diet caused my cancer?

Whereas many alternative sites will lobby that stress, diet and toxins result in cancer, I tend to make them minor players. Why? If diet were a major cause of cancer, then a reasonable person would expect 3rd world nations, and those suffering famine, malnutrition and or mal-absorption to have a high incidence of cancer. However, this appears not to be the case. The top 11 countries [1-10] with the highest cancer incidence, per 100,000 residents, are: Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, Hungary, USA, Belgium, France, Denmark, Norway, Netherlands and Canada.  I do not consider any of these country substandard with a poor food pipelines. 2,3

Do you think pollution caused my cancer?

The top 10 country polluters as of January 2019 [1-10]: Qatar, Kuwait, United Arab Emirates, Australia, Turkmenistan, Oman, United States, Saudi Arabia, Canada and Kazakhstan 4. Again comparing the highest cancer incidence to pollution generation, we see that Australia, USA and Canada have certain things in common.

Do you think stress caused my cancer?

Stress in an interesting feeling. As with any other feeling, we self-generate stress. A bit of searching attests that the following are the 10 most stress countries according to world atlas [1-10}: Nigeria, South Africa, El Salvador, Mongolia, Guatemala, Colombia, Pakistan, Jamaica, Macedonia, and Bolivia. Forbes top 10 [1-10} were: Greece, Philippines, Tanzania, Albania, Iran, Sri Lanka, USA, Uganda, Costa Rica, and Rwanda. 5

Irrespective of research, the bottom line is that when it comes to stress, you are the one who generates it.  There appears to be an inverse relationship between unfamiliarity (anything outside your comfort zone) and stress generation. The more familiar you are with a topic or environment, the less stress you generate.  The more unfamiliar you are with a topic or environment, the higher your stress generation.  Who decides familiarity? You do. Thus stress is self-generated.  I often hear people stay: I had no option… Incorrect. One always has at least one option, always. For example: one always has the option of doing nothing.  Another way of saying this is: The more insecurity you feel the more fear you generate. The more fear you generate, the higher your stress level.

Speculative questions on how to interview your oncologist

How long has it been growing in my body?

Is this a fast growing or slow growing cancer?

These questions cannot be answered with any certainty. Cancers are usually found by accident, known as an accidental finding. When found they have been present from 3 months to 3 years. Any answer provided can only be based on the oncologist’s experience, but most often the answer is based on literature statistics. Thus the answer is generic and not specific for your particular cancer.

As for the speed of growth, this speculation is often used a motivator designed to pressure the patient to capitulate to the generic formulary for the diagnosis. Regrettably, some practitioners prefer high-pressure sales tactics. Remember, mainstream formularies (cancer treatments) are diagnosis specific, not customized for patients or you. Alterations in the preconceived dosage and frequency occur after the patient develops adverse effects to chemotherapy.

Treatment Questions On How to Interview Your Oncologist

What treatment do you recommend?

How did you decide on the treatment regimen for me specifically?

One of the many canned answers includes: your kind of cancer responds well to these medications.  Followed by a success percentage usually in excess of 50%. With few exceptions, of Hodgkin’s Disease and testicular cancer which have a 5-year success rate between 35-42%, all other cancers respond to chemotherapy less that 12% of the time. Overall, chemotherapy’s efficacy is less than 2.5% -.6

Can I do alternative or complimentary treatments along with chemotherapy?

The agreed upon answer applicable to many if not most oncologists is, “No”. Other choices include: if that were any good, don’t you think we’d be using it?  Actually not! The answer as to why it is not being used is because insurance has decided not to issue a reimbursement code. Another favorite answer is that it interferes with chemotherapy. However, ask to see the research for this unsubstantiated claim, it does not exist.

Have you ever treated anyone with cancer using just alternative remedies?

What are your first-hand experience using natural or holistic medical treatments?

As you have figured out by now, doctors, as any other human or professional, also have comfort zones and when asked to deviate from it, they appear to do just about anything-possible not to budge. Please remember, doctors are human after all.

What drives this mind set? Many answer, it’s the money. Few consider the paradox of choice. The paradox of choice may be defined as: when more choices are available choosing becomes more difficult and less satisfying. Let’s apply the paradox of choice to cancer.

When there are 3 choices: chemotherapy, natural treatments designed to fortify the patient’s immune system and doing nothing, choosing appears less certain than when given just 2 options, namely, chemotherapy or nothing.

The Intelligent Treatment Approach For The Patient Diagnosed With Any Cancer – Part 3

by:  Carlos Garcia, M.D.

In Part 1 and Part 2 of this series, I wrote about how mainstream medicine approaches cancer and why I believe this is the wrong approach.  In this article, I will discuss how Utopia Wellness treats the patient differently and why I believe this is the Intelligent Approach.

To begin with, Utopia Wellness treats the person, not the diagnosis and not the body part affected by cancer.  We recognize that only you can cure yourself via your immune system and, therefore, you are the most important health tool in your tool chest.

The first step in healing is taking a deep breath and keep in mind that you do not need to make a treatment decision in 5 minutes.  Once diagnosed many patients feel rushed into making “life or death” decisions, however, keep in mind you were as sick the day before you were told of your diagnosis as you are the day that your diagnosis was confirmed.  By the time symptoms developed, you probably had cancer for 3 months to 3 years and a few more days or weeks will not affect your outcome.  So take a deep breath and do some research before choosing a plan that is right for you.  Now a disclaimer – this does not apply to cancers with emergent complications such as bowel perforations, inability to defecate or urinate.

Utopia Wellness takes a holistic approach to cancer by treating the mind, body and spirit. You will be an integral member of your healthcare team and as such, you and our practitioners must forge a bond of trust and respect.

The quality of your life during and after treatment is paramount at Utopia Wellness. Mainstream medicine feeds the narrative that suffering is necessary for success. I could live with that if their methods were successful. Walk down any cancer ward and ask a patient for their driver’s license picture. Comparison between the person speaking with you and the picture on the license will speak volumes, but only if you choose to listen.

We understand that the cancerous growth is the symptom, what fuels its growth is the problem. Our job is to identify it; explain it to you; help you identify what needs to change in your life, but only if you want to do so and if you do, help you implement the changes.

We also evaluate dental issues such as root canals.  All 32 teeth are living organs, just like your bones.  Like living bones they have a bone and nerve supply.  When the dentist performs a root canal treatment he/she creates a gangrenous organ. It’s like if a surgeon removes an infected appendix but leaves it in the abdomen.  Dentistry is the only profession where the deliberate creation of a gangrenous organ with systemic access is taught, endorsed and encouraged to be performed.

We evaluate and address emotional issues that are fueling the cancer.  We take an active approach to counseling by guiding patients to acknowledge and resolve harmful patterns and make new empowered choices.  This facet of our program provides the tools and guidance necessary for healing emotional imbalances, resolving relationship conflict, managing stress, and finding inner peace.

We offer safe and natural intravenous infusions that have oxygenating and antiviral properties.  This is based on the works of Royal Rife whose research demonstrated that cancer is viral in nature and Otto Warburg, Nobel laureate, whose research demonstrated that cancer is an anaerobic disease, that cannot tolerate oxygenation.

Dr. Warburg’s research also demonstrated that most cancer cells prefer an acidic (lower) pH level and thrive in these conditions. Also shown is that cancer growth can be reduced and certain cancer cells may be killed with increased pH levels. That is the purpose of High pH Therapy and why it is an integral part of our Program.

One of the ways we accomplish higher pH levels is through significant dietary changes. What you don’t eat is just as important as what you do eat. A good diet will not only benefit the non-cancerous cells it can also “starve” the cancer cells. A bad diet, on the other hand, can actually “feed” the cancer cells. An unhealthy diet is a major contributing factor to almost all chronic diseases including cancer. By eating high alkaline, organic whole foods, you can give your body and immune system the tools necessary to heal. When body tissues have a high alkaline level, they are better able to hold on to more oxygen as compared to tissues with a high acid level.

Utopia also believes that toxins contribute to the development of cancer and inhibit the immune system from destroying cancer.  There are several types of toxins in the body that need to be dealt with when addressing detoxification for cancer. First is cellular toxicity caused by the propelling of toxins into cells due to excess acidity in the blood, and the inability to release toxins in the cells for that very same reason.

Next is heavy metal and chemical toxicity coming from years of exposure to highly toxic heavy metals and chemicals. While many of these toxins come from the air, food and water, there are also some culprits that you may not be aware of. Silver amalgam fillings, many vaccines and some other drugs put mercury and other toxins into our body. Elevated levels of heavy metals disrupt the immune system, and must be dealt with when fighting cancer.

We offer various detoxification therapies to address these toxins.  Since these toxins are stored throughout the body, we attack them from several angels.  We provide organ flushes aimed to restore the body’s regulatory mechanisms. These organs all work to naturally remove toxins from the body, however, in the presence of cancer they can become overburdened and inefficient.

It is essential to restore health to the body when treating cancer and a healthy liver, gallbladder, and pancreas is essential to cancer recovery. The function of these organs can be compromised by the presence of microbes and parasites as they steal energy from these organs’ cells and excreting mycotoxins among other things. When these organs become weak, the immune system becomes compromised.

Colon Therapy is also employed to flush toxins from the colon. The organs just mentioned are continually filtering toxins from the body and they are flushed out through the colon and the kidneys. When the body is overwhelmed with cancer, this system becomes less efficient which allows the body to reabsorb these toxins. Additionally, with cancer, large tumors can break and cause necrotic areas, formed of dead tissue. Since the body expels these toxic byproducts through the colon, it’s vital to keep the colon flushed out with a cleansing Colon Therapy.

To further aid our patients in detoxifying, we offer lymphatic drainage, FAR infrared sauna, and herbal poultices and tinctures. And while the detoxification process aids in fortifying the immune system, we don’t stop there. High doses of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals are offered intravenously for maximum absorption. Peroxide therapy and hyperbaric oxygen therapy increase oxygen levels in the body. All of these therapies work synergistically to give the body tools to fight cancer.

I am sure everyone has heard of or is familiar with cannabidiol (CBD). Medicine has recognized systems in the body such as the endocrine system, immune system, respiratory system, nervous system, etc.  What has recently immerged is the discovery of the endocannabinoid system.  This is a biological system composed of endocannabinoids which are, simply put, retrograde neurotransmitters that bind to cannabinoid receptors and proteins that are expressed throughout the central nervous system.  Early research is showing cannabinoids seem to inhibit the growth of many different types of tumor cell in both test tubes and animal models.  While still in its infancy, CBD is showing a lot of promise and that is why we incorporate it into our program.

At Utopia Wellness, we use the CBD oil, derived from the cannabis plant, with 0% THC. THC is the psychoactive part of the cannabis plant that affects a person’s memory, pleasure, movements, thinking, concentration, coordination, and sensory and time perception. Professionally I find that THC is the rate limiting step preventing the appropriate use of CBD. The reason I say this is because our patients are able to use the dosages which exceed the recommended dosages with very significant and beneficial effects and little to no side-effects.

Medicine the Art: -medicine is not a science. This does not mean that science does not provide useful information to the practitioner.  However, if technology was essential overcoming illness, none of us would be living today. Remember, the incidence of cancer today is 10 times what it was 100 years ago with significantly less scientific knowledge! What makes medicine an art are the people. Those providing guidance for an issue, their biases, and experiences. As well as those seeking guidance for an issue and their interpretation and implementation of the guidance based on numerous factors, i.e. previous experience, religious belief, family and society accepted norms etc. this is why good medicine is tailored to each individual. Mainstream medicine seeks to make the patient ‘fit’ protocol specific for a diagnosis. We at Utopia Wellness know that you are not your diagnosis, nor are you defined by the diagnosis.

Let it also be known, the reason we use a plethora of different practitioners, dentist, psychologist, massage, chiropractic, orthogonal chiropractic, colon therapist, mainstream diagnostic tools, surgery and or radiation in specific situations, antibiotics and antifungals when necessary, homeopathy, supplements, dietary counseling, and other modalities is because patients’ needs change in the journey to health and wellness. Thus we adapt our program and change as the patient’s needs change.

Medicine can be dynamic provided the practitioner treats the person seeking care in his/her entirety. When practitioners blindly follow protocols based on diagnosis and body parts as the totality of medicine, then it fails more often than not. The United States is sicker today than ever, and getting sicker every day. Unfortunately, unless the delivery of medicine is given back to the practitioners, I suggest you start considering that you are living in what others will refer to as the good old days.

The years have taught me that because we are all unique petri dishes, medicine will always be art. What happens in the laboratory is of interest, however does not reflect the human body in that our essence, feeling, thoughts, and experiences (biases) are excluded. Mainstream medicine strives to make the patient – doctor interaction as efficient as a Formula 1® pit stop. It is attempting to make the bonding experience, which so essential for good medicine, into a digital experience.

Perhaps this sums my position best: I am smart enough to know that I am dumb when it comes to knowing all the intricacies of the human being, thus I earn the respect and trust of the patient. Mainstream medicine is dumb in that it believes that they can recreate human experiences in a laboratory setting.

Wellness and Detoxification

The First Step to Wellness ~ Detoxification

The elimination of toxins is very important for improved immune function.  Toxins are found in the air that we breathe, the water we drink, the food that we eat and even in our mouth from sources of dental toxins. Once our systems are overloaded with toxins it becomes an ideal environment for a multitude of diseases, autoimmune conditions, parasites and Candida.

Your skin, liver, kidneys, lymphatic system and colon perform together to keep toxins and waste moving naturally. Unfortunately, excess buildup of toxins and your body’s constant effort to eliminate them burns up vital nutrients, drains energy, weakens the immune system and affects your health in a variety of ways.  There are many natural therapies that aid in the elimination of these toxins.

Experts agree that your colon might hold the key to your overall health. When working well, your colon absorbs essential nutrients and passes waste and toxins out of your body. Many diseases are now being related directly or indirectly to a congested colon. Improperly digested food goes through the intestinal system, it turns to waste, attaches itself to the intestinal wall and becomes toxic.  As 70% of our immune system is in our digestive tract, these toxins severely impair our immune system. This toxic waste is essentially slow acting poison to the human body.

Colon therapy, also referred to as colonics is the gentle introduction of purified water into the colon, washing the large intestine.  Toxins that have built up over the years along with encrusted fecal matter mucous begin to slough off and evacuate. This safe and natural treatment is both alleviating and effective.

Your skin is a major organ of elimination, but many people do not sweat on a regular basis.  Sedentary living can contribute to inactivating this inborn system of removing the buildup of toxins.  FAR Infrared saunas warm the body instead of heating the surrounding air. Infrared saunas are able to penetrate deeper into the skin which activates and releases debris from the subcutaneous fat just beneath the skin reducing your toxic load significantly.

Your lymphatic system is responsible for initiating immune response.  This system picks up waste and toxins from your body’s cells and carries it away with lymph fluid.  Lymphatic massage helps by increasing lymphatic circulation thus detoxifying the body and increasing the functions of the immune system.

Take your step on the road to regaining your health by engaging in some of these detoxification practices on a regular basis.

Initial Contact with Utopia Wellness

Initial contact with Utopia creates a warm and fuzzy glow. Speaking with Mark is the only way to go.It’s always a pleasure for someone to answer the phone but to have someone in the know is practically unknown.  (Thanks Mark)

Expressing my feelings about Utopia seems a daunting task.  Upon arrival at the clinic I had a lot of questions to ask.

The orientation by Belinda is enough to smother even the brightest of minds.

The knowledge of nutrition that Belinda brings to the Center makes her the best of finds.  (Que tengas una vida maravillosa)

Talk about therapy and what do you get?  Laughter is a good bet.

The Queen of that therapy resides in the front office.  The merriment from there is nothing short of raucous. Rox may call you honey but she also collects the money.  (May your laughter ring forever)

Sara monitors us all.  Her office is the first door on the left down the hall.

When the blood work comes out, Sara lets us know what it’s all about.

You may think her advice is cold as ice, but when she warms up she can’t be more nice. (Maintain that glow forever)

When you first enter Utopia you must take a seat where Claudia will have you sign a sheet.

The dry humor displayed by Claudia will often give cause for alarm but getting to know her reveals her sweet charm.  (Can I cross my legs now?)

When in need of colon care, Beth is always there.

She her own little empire that when one leaves they walk a little higher.

(Love your dedication)

The I.V.’s are hung by the chairs with care.  Xochitl or Shayla will stick you when you get there.  If you think you are a tough nut wait until Xochitl gives you a shot in the butt.  (Thanks for caring girls)

Jake is in charge of making your deepest woes go away.  He does this by having you write an essay each day.

If he delves into your deepest thoughts do not despair, he is only trying to get your body to repair.  (Your pot of gold awaits you)

When you hear that cute giggle you know that Elizabeth is about.  Her trained hands we can’t do without.

When it comes to being a body detective she is the most effective.

(I offer deep feeling for you)

When it comes to practice what you preach, Doc is out of reach.

“Growing old is mandatory, growing up is optional”, is obviously Doc’s motto.

He wears his Superman socks while driving his hot rod auto.

I’m sharing my feelings with you because you made my journey so pleasant.  I have never become so fond of so many people in such a short time.  I hope I left something positive there at Utopia.  I love you and miss you.  See you in February.

The Mind/Body Connection

Many patients first turn to holistic medicine because they know what they don’t want rather than understanding the approach itself. They are very clear in not wanting surgery, biopsies, chemotherapy, radiation or a lifetime commitment to medications. That doesn’t necessarily mean that they understand the nature of the mind, body and spirit approach to treating diseases.

Mind/Body Connection

Upon arriving at Utopia, many are still of the mindset that we and not they are in control of their outcome. They may be compliant in taking supplements, making dietary changes and keeping to their appointed therapy schedules but given the opportunity, they would place the emotional work on the back burner if allowed to. The concept that emotional imbalances in their lives can negatively affect their overall health is foreign to them. The thought of making the necessary changes in their lives in order to create a harmonious environment scares them. The amount of work involved in confronting their anger, hurt or confusion is overwhelming to them.

When we allow and accept everything that happens to us as though we have no choice, we are taking a passive role in our lives. The feeling that we are victims of circumstance, that we have no choice, leaves us feeling helpless and hopeless. These negative emotions can cause the physical self to fall down on its job of fighting off disease.

In the game of life, the active participant comes out a winner, while the passive spectator is often the loser. You can decide how you will get your needs met and work in cooperation with others to accomplish what is wanted. You can let others know how you wish to be treated and what you will and will not accept. Only you can set boundaries for yourself.

Learning to respond differently may not happen overnight. You can begin by being more aware of how you are reacting to various people and events. You can try different responses until you find the ones that work for you. With practice, your heightened sense of awareness, coupled with your power of choice, will help you establish new behaviors and create wellness.

The Four Aspects of You

In order to create wellness, every aspect of yourself must have its needs met and must work in harmony. Each aspect of yourself must work in accord to achieve overall health and each part needs your attention and care to perform at its best. The four aspects of yourself are as follows:

Medicine Wheel
  • The Physical you (your body) – This is your tangible structure. This includes the five senses, which enables you to touch, see, hear, smell and taste the world around you. The physical you requires good nutrition, appropriate weight, beneficial exercise and adequate rest.
  • The Emotional you (your feelings) – This is your range of emotions from fear and anger to love and joy. The emotional you needs to give and receive forgiveness, love and compassion. The emotional you needs to laugh and experience happiness as well as joyful relationships with yourself and others.
  • The Mental you (your thoughts) – This is your knowledge, attitudes and beliefs; your analytical self. The mental you needs self-supportive attitudes, positive thoughts and viewpoints and a positive self-image.
  • The Spiritual you (your spirit) – This is your relationship with yourself, your creativity, your life purpose, and your relationship with a Higher Power. The spiritual you requires inner calmness, openness to your creativity and a trust in your inner knowing.

All of these aspects work together to make you a whole person. What happens to one aspect can affect all the other aspects. In order to create wellness you must expand your focus beyond mere physical health and strive to balance and integrate your physical, emotional, mental and spiritual aspects. These aspects of yourself must be in balance for optimal well-being.

Declare Your Independence!

As our nation celebrates its independence, we pause to reflect on the price that was paid for that independence.  Countless sacrifices were made and many lives were lost in the quest for freedom.  We as a people stood our ground and declared that we were all created equal and that we were all endowed with certain unalienable rights, which among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.A declaration is a proclamation.  When you make a personal declaration you are proclaiming and asserting what it is that you desire in your life. Have you ever considered what your personal declaration of independence would look like?  Is there anything or anyone that is preventing you from living the life you choose for yourself or hindering your pursuit of happiness?Take the time to reflect upon what you want in life.  Think about the areas that you are struggling with or those that you would like to see some improvements.  Reflect upon the price that you have paid in allowing yourself and others to dismiss the significance of your life. How much longer will you sacrifice your right to be free to live the life you choose to live?

Write down your declarations and proclaim them out loud.  Here are some examples that may help you in preparing your declaration:

  • I pledge to love myself unconditionally.
  • I pledge to make my life a priority.
  • I pledge to trust myself unconditionally.
  • I pledge to respect myself unconditionally.

Summer Sun Protection Tips

Great Minds think alike

Summer is here! Who doesn’t want to be outside enjoying fun activities in the sun?  Here are a few tips that will help you to avoid the unwanted consequences of sunburn and it’s long term damaging effects due to overexposure.

Summer Sun Protection Tips
  1. Check the UV index for the day of your outing. The UV index provides important information to help you plan your outdoor activities in ways to prevent sun exposure.
  1. Make you plans around the sun. Go outdoors in early morning or late afternoon when the sun is lower in the sky. Keep in mind that the sun is strongest between 10:00am and 4:00pm.
  1. Find a shady spot or make your own shade. When planning a picnic, search for a spot under a tree or take a large beach umbrella or a canopy to the beach.  Keep very young children (6 months or less) out of the sun. Even when in the shade, remember that UV rays bounce off sand and water. These simple measures can reduce the risk of multiple burns by 30%
  1. Cover up! Wearing clothes such as shirts, hats, shorts and pants shield your skin from the sun’s UV rays. Wear a hat with a wide brim that shades your face, ears and the back of your neck. You can reduce the risk of damaging sun exposure by 27% just by covering up.
  1. Protect your eyes. Sunglasses are essential when protecting your eyes from UV radiation, they are not simply a fashion accessory; they can reduce the risk of cataracts and protect the tender skin around your eyes from sun exposure. Choose sunglasses that block both UVA and UVB rays.
  1. Don’t get burned! Red, sore, blistered skin means you’ve gotten far too much sun.  Sunscreen should actually be your last line of defense against sun damage. When using sunscreen make sure it has a sun protective factor of 15 or higher with both UVA and UVB protection. Don’t forget that sunscreen wears off and you should reapply often.  Refer to the Environmental Working Group’s website to get the score on your current sunscreen product and for a guide to choosing safer sunscreen products.

Chelation Therapy Critics Refuted!

Great Minds think alike

Utopia Wellness and Carlos Garcia, M.D. have been offering Chelation Therapy successfully and safely to patients for over 20 years.  These patients suffer from heart disease, strokes, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and more.  In the past, critics of this valuable therapy cited the lack of scientific double-blind studies showing the therapy is efficacious and safe. Groups such as the Quackbusters are all over the internet calling doctors that offer the therapy, unethical, frauds, quacks and lunatics.  The doctors that offer this life-saving therapy are well aware of the benefits and are willing to face ridicule, humiliation and renouncement from their peers in order to help their patients.  These doctors would love nothing more than to see a double-blind study conducted to hush their critics and make chelation therapy more widely available to patients.  The challenge has been, however, who would fund this study?

Chelation Therapy Critics Refuted

Most double-blind studies are conducted by Big Pharma seeking to obtain FDA approval for a new drug.  They possess the substantial resources necessary to conduct the studies and will do so because they stand to gain enormous returns on their investment.  EDTA which is used in chelation therapy is a readily available and inexpensive amino acid whose patentability expired long ago.  No one stands to financially gain from conducting the study (except the patient).  Enter Gervasio Lamas, M.D.

Gervasio Antonio Lamas, M.D. is the chief of cardiology at Columbia University Division of Cardiology, Mount Sinai Hospital.  Dr. Lamas received his BA in Biochemical Sciences (cum laude) from Harvard College and his MD with honors (AOA) from New York University. He completed his internship, residency, and cardiology training at the Brigham and Women’s hospital (Harvard Medical School, Boston MA), and then served on the faculty of Harvard Medical School.  I think his CV and credentials would give the critics of chelation pause!

Dr. Lamas described his epiphany on chelation therapy in a similar way that Utopia Wellness’s Dr. Garcia experienced it.  The following excerpt was reported by James Hamblin of The Atlantic.  You can read his article in it’s entirety at http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2014/10/there-is-no-alternative-medicine/379342/

One day in 1999, a disheveled man (Lamas describes him as resembling Lieutenant Columbo, but with heart disease) came to Mount Sinai asking whether chelation therapy was worthwhile. “Of course not,” Lamas told him. “That’s quackery. It might be dangerous, it’s certainly costly, and it’s not going to do you any good.”

But that night, Lamas found himself dwelling on his dogmatic response. “It’s not like I had a class on chelation therapy,” he told me, his eyes closing as he smiled. On the windowless walls of his office hang his Harvard degree, a certification of training from Boston’s prestigious Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and one of his many New England Journal of Medicine articles—his past work includes seminal research that changed how cardiologists use pacemakers. Earlier in his career, he said, researching an alternative-medicine practice never would have crossed his mind. In Miami, though, the culture is more “open-minded.” So he called up the National Institutes of Health and set about procuring the funds to get to the bottom of his Columbo dilemma.  He succeeded and the study was funded.

The randomized double-blind study was conducted between 2003-2010 on 1,708 adults aged 50 and older. Study participants had suffered a heart attack six weeks or more before enrollment.  The results proved EDTA chelation therapy is clinically significant and safe for patients with cardiovascular disease and diabetes.  Dr. Lamas stated in his findings that this statistically significant improvement should be further studied to determine if chelation therapy should be routinely offered for cardiovascular hydisease.

Plans are now underway for a 2016 study on using chelation therapy to treat diabetes.  In the meantime, Dr. Lamas will continue to offer chelation therapy to his patients.  Of significant importance to the advancement of this life-saving treatment, Mount Sinai Hospital is now the first US hospital to offer chelation therapy for cardiovascular patients.
