Love Yourself First

Love Yourself First

February is considered to be the month of love. On Valentine’s Day, we send those we love heart shaped cards adorned with cupids, professing our admiration and devotion. We write line after line revealing to them how great we think they are. We expound on their positive characteristics, attributes and talents. We express to them how important they are to us and the essential role they play in our lives. The words flow easily because we sincerely feel that this person is worthy of our praise, worthy of our love. For some of us it is easier to love someone else than it is to love ourselves. Sometimes we’re so busy loving someone or waiting for someone to love us that we’ve forgotten about the one person we need to love first, ourselves. The truth of the matter is that in order to love another person fully you must love yourself first.

Self-Love is the source of all our other loves.” Pierre Corneille

So why is it sometimes difficult for us to see the worthiness in ourselves, to really love ourselves? Many times it can be attributed to the previous programming we’ve experienced in our lives. So if that is the case, what can we do to create this loving feeling for ourselves? Well, practice makes perfect! So, do yourself a favor, take a deep breath, give yourself a little hug and practice some of these suggestions to overcome that previous programming and make loving ourselves first, a priority.

  • Forgive yourself. You can’t change things you have done in the past, but you can control your future. Learn from those past experiences and then let them go.
  • Embrace and love the things that make you different. The only person you should compare yourself to, is you.
  • Learn to say no. Saying no to someone maybe saying yes to yourself. It doesn’t make you a bad person, it makes you a wiser person.
  • Each day fill your body with food and drink that nourishes it and makes it thrive.
  • Find something to be grateful for no matter how big or small.
  • Follow your passion and do the things that get you excited, the things that you really want to do.

You deserve to be loved not only by those around you but the most important person in your life, you. Practicing self-love can be challenging for many of us, especially in times when we face challenges. We practice self-love so we can push through our limiting beliefs and live a life that truly reflects who we are.
