The Game of Life

Doc told the campers a fascinating story about a patient he met when he was doing his pediatric rotation in medical school. This young boy suffered from hemophilia but unlike the other children who were also there being treated for the same condition, his infusion worked faster and he spent far less days in the hospital. The doctors were stumped but the boy was confident that he knew the reason for his success. He explained to them that he would pretend that the infusion of Factor VIII was actually Mighty Mouse flying around in his body plugging up the holes.
Doc asked the campers to design their own game to rid themselves of cancer or any other chronic illness. One camper did a word search puzzle that she called “Heal and Seek”. All the words contributed to good health. The words could be found diagonally, vertically, horizontally, from left to right, right to left, top to bottom and bottom to top. She instructed the group to search for the words and to think of it as a metaphor for life because sometimes good things are right in front of us and we can’t see them. When we look hard enough, it will come into focus.
Another camper thought of the childhood game, Chutes and Ladders. Her comparisons to life were that you take it one step at a time, sometimes you have to take a few steps backwards and if you make a few good decisions you get to move a few more steps forward. When opportunity comes your way you make the choice to climb the ladder. It takes more effort to climb the ladder but it also takes you to a new level. When you hit a shoot you slide down a bit but you dust yourself off and keep going. That’s when you know that you have won, when you can look back at all the ups and downs as an opportunity to learn and grow.
A creative camper came up with her very own game she called “Journey to the Mountaintop of Wellbeing”. As you journey up the mountaintop you may come across impasses. If your impasse is confrontation or denial your objective will be to find a pathway to forgiveness. If your impasse is negative people, places or things your objective is to bulletproof through them. When you reach the mountaintop you are whole, complete and healed.
Make your game of life all about you. Do the things you love, find your joy and love yourself unconditionally. Make getting well fun!
