Mexican Cancer Clinics – Caveat Emptor
Caveat Emptor is what I would tell a cancer patient seeking alternative cancer treatments in Mexico. While there are reputable clinics in Mexico offering a similar holistic approach to cancer as that offered at Utopia Wellness, there are also many clinics, operating illegally, that offer dangerous, unproven treatments and prey on the desperation of patients and family members. Loose regulatory standards in Mexico allow these clinics to thrive.
There have been several investigations of Mexican clinics over the past decade which have led to convictions and closures. In 2001, approximately a dozen clinics were shut down by Mexican regulators after finding that many were unlicensed and falsely promised patients a “cure” using “new technology”. One clinic founder pleaded guilty to fraud and money laundering in 2002, after he set up a company that offered “magnetic field” therapy. The clinic operator and other company officers solicited investments in their “new technology.” According to an investigative report in the San Diego Times-Union, the company reportedly had received $675,000 in payments before it closed. Its owner, who had represented himself as a world-renowned scientist, was sentenced to more than seven years in federal prison. According to the U.S. attorney prosecuting the case, all of the clinic’s patients died.
In this same article in the San Diego Times-Union, they reported another clinic that was shut down after the Mexican authorities discovered the clinic was not authorized to do surgery, laboratory tests, or diagnostic procedures. This clinic was headed by an American man. According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, he had been charged with practicing medicine without a license in 1970. He had obtained a naturopathic license using a forged degree. However, like other clinic operators convicted of crimes in the U.S., he was able to open and run a clinic in Mexico. Even more alarming, according to Mexican official Dr. Alfredo Gruel Culebro, “Even if they are shut down, they can request a new permit altogether and start operating practically next door.”
This is not to say that all clinics in Mexico are unsafe and illegal. It is, however, a risk you take when you travel there. At Utopia Wellness, we offer the same holistic and natural approach to healing and are right outside of Tampa, FL. We don’t just see the disease, we see the person behind the disease and know how to care for them in every way. Our clinic is run by a licensed Medical Doctor with 18 years experience working with natural and non-toxic treatments. These treatments are designed to work together to help the body, mind and soul heal while in a safe and caring environment.
